I am not a gtk expert but have installed it before on RH9.
Do these first:
# export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/lib/pkgconfig:/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig
# export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib:/usr/local/lib
Then, try again.
