Getting a -I/usr/include/gtk-1.2 into gcc would be more productive, either by modifying the CFLAGS or CPPFLAGS environment variables: export CPPFLAGS=`gtk-config --cflags` (note those *back*ticks) (or similar magic inside a Makefile).
