gtkfont measure

re all
how can you know the maximum width and height for characters
in a specified font? I ask for maximum because i need to draw same space
between chars
whatever is the character so i gonna draw max space;but how could i get this
value?
btw : still under gtk1.2 :p
...maybe i could measure "W" ...
