text over desktop

Hello.
I am wanting to make a small program to write text over the desktop, as
in write text over other windows as well, kind of like when you switch
workspaces on WindowMaker.
Do you know of anyone who has done this? Or if it is feasible?
I just thought it would be a neat idea to be able to run commands that
way instead of typing it in a window's text entry.

I was inspired by watching Lain, btw.

Any other pointer would be helpfull too. (I was thinking i should do
this with gdk only)
