"removing glib/gtk"

Hi,
I've decided that I want to learn LINUX the hard
way...essentially, through cli only. I've also noticed that the best
way to run nessus (necessary for what I'm doing) is through X. The
problem is, my system Mandrake 9.0/RC2 comes with some strange
pre-installed glib/gtk configuration because the error I was getting
when trying to compile gtk told me that glib-config reported 1.2.9,
while the "GLIB 1.2.10" was installed. The install script then told me
to remove the old version...which is where the dumbfounded look came
from.

HOW on earth do I "remove" this package/libraries?

Thanks, much appreciated folks - I'm sort of lost and this is the only
group I thought would know.
