Pango markup in tree cell renderers

Hi;

Is is possible to use pango markup in a cell renderer ? 
and if so how ?

I've tried passing '  renderer, "markup" '  to
gtk_tree_view_insert_column_with_attributes() which doesn't give an
error. However any pango markup I then enter is ignored. 

Has anyone even seen an app which does this ?
