The problem was that my X11 headers are in /usr/local/X11R6/include/X11. Pango's configure script doesn't search this directory per default. After setting a symlink from /usr/local/include/X11 to /usr/local/X11R6/include/X11, it works.
It seems tterrors.h is only needed for older freetype installations (the configure script speaks about ft 2.0.3 and 2.0.4).
After recompiling GTK, too, AA fonts are finally working =)
