trouble while compiling gtk+ 1.2 version program

sir,
    i have trouble in getting the o/p of the program 
written in gtk+ 1.2 version.

the warning we got is :
GTK_WARNING**:CANNOT OPEN DISPLAY.
we are using red hatlinux 7.1 version having gtk+ 1.2
version. we request for u'r help in this regard.
