Does syslog (or anything else) show any RPC timeouts? Perhaps the NIS
server is too busy. I have seen this on a pure Linux network.
I have also had an Oracle signon fail in a similar fashion on a pure
HP-UX network even though the application was already running under
the same UID. The only "cure" was to retry the login.
