"personal" install of gtk/glib

Thank-you all for your help/suggestions so far; I thought I was
successful, but then when I tried to install xmms (which was the reason
for installing gtk in the first place) I still got a "cannot find glib"
error, so I'm trying again.  Please clarify one point: should the results
of glib reside in the gtk directory?  Thanks.
