Help, how to set background color of a text(window)

Hi everyone,
   We are currently writing a text editor and I wonder
whether there is an easy way to set up the background
color of a text widget (or a window). We can set the
background of the text we will insert, but that
doesn't fill the entire window, so is there something
like a function that I can call to accomplish that?
