The widget should do everything you asked for. It supports transfer
table arrays that you can use to do grey level stretching etc.

The main problem currently is documentation. I still haven't been
able to figure out how to get gtkdoc to work.

You might also want to have a look at giv at:

    http://imagic.weizmann.ac.il/~dov/freesw/gtk/giv/

which is written around the gtk image viewer widget.
