Edit the #defines at the top of gtk/gtkrange.c and recompile would
be about your only option.

There will be a mechanism for configuring this sort of thing in GTK+-2.0 -
I just added a note to http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3958
to remind us of this particular one.
