Widget is hidden from view.. associated event

I'd like to know when a widget is no longer visible (as far as the 
user/X is concerned with).  I thought it would be is the 
visibility_event, but the event never gets invoked when I minimize or 
hide the application.  Is there any way to capture such an event?
