PS to previous post:

I failed to mention (or realize for a moment) that situation 2) is easy to implement as described with given primitives, as you
only have to catch the button press signals.  That was listed because the "normal" behavior in this situation should be documented
as a (GTK) example.  Situation 1) (nonmodal) is basically the problem, of course subject to possibility under a window manager and
X.  Also, 3) is ill defined without an example foreign toolkit and maybe out of GTK control.  The special case of 3) with all
GTK-owned windows deserves a solution though.
