Background image within window

Can anyone tell a newbie to GTK (or better yet, point me to a working
example) how to display an image as a centered background image within a
window?

If you could explain it a little it would be much appreciated.  I found
an example of using gtk_widget_modify_style at
http://www106.pair.com/rhp/gtk-colors.html, but can not get it to work
properly (the example is for changing the windows background color, but
can be used for background images.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
