gtk Makefile and make 3.79

There seems to be some kind of problem with the gtk/Makefile when I use
make 3.79
Making all in gtk
make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/local/src/gtk+-1.2.7/gtk'
Makefile:472: *** Insufficient number of arguments (0) to function
`strip'. Stop.
make 3.77 works fine
