vertical gtklabel!?

I'm writing a simple graphing program and I'm currently working on the y
axis label.  I want the text to be vertically rotated so that the bottom
of the text is actually on the y axis (like most graphs).  I'm having a
very hard time finding a way to do this short of making low level gdk
calls.  I tried doing a hack where the text is just one character per line
all the way down and horizontally oriented.  It sucks.

How do I make a vertical label!?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
