display equations

I'd like for my gtk app to display some help items that involve
moderately complex equations.  I've experimented with (a)
typsetting the help with LaTeX and converting to postscript,
then (b) converting from postscript to PNG and putting the PNG
into a gtk_canvas.  I wonder if anyone can suggest a better way
of doing this.  (I suppose a "better way" is likely to involve
xml/mathml.)
