help with imlib and gtk/gdk

hi

after installing gnome the hard way (from source code) whenever
i start gnome panel or whatever gnome-related app that uses png
images i get the following:

--
/convert: No such file or directory
gdk_imlib ERROR: Cannot load image: /path/to/png
All fallbacks failed
--

and of cource the resoult is that i can't see any png's

But this only happens in menus, gtk-themes or anything that
uses png-icons
gimp, ImagMagic (compiled in the same way) display
png images correctly

here is the output of ldconfig (if that is usefull)

$ /sbin/ldconfig -p | grep imlib
    libimlib-xpm.so (libc6) => /usr/lib/libimlib-xpm.so
    libimlib-tiff.so (libc6) => /usr/lib/libimlib-tiff.so
    libimlib-ps.so (libc6) => /usr/lib/libimlib-ps.so
    libimlib-ppm.so (libc6) => /usr/lib/libimlib-ppm.so
    libimlib-png.so (libc6) => /usr/lib/libimlib-png.so
    libimlib-jpeg.so (libc6) => /usr/lib/libimlib-jpeg.so
    libimlib-gif.so (libc6) => /usr/lib/libimlib-gif.so
    libimlib-bmp.so (libc6) => /usr/lib/libimlib-bmp.so
    libgdk_imlib.so.1 (libc6) => /usr/lib/libgdk_imlib.so.1
    libgdk_imlib.so (libc6) => /usr/lib/libgdk_imlib.so

I would appreciate any help

N
