Cannot compile gtk+-1.2.7

Hi all,
   I am trying to compile gtk+-1.2.7, but at
./configure I get the
following message:

make [2]: Entering directory '/gtk+-1.2.7/gtk'
Makefie: 472 *** Insufficient number of arguments (0)
to function
'strip'. Stop
make [2]: Leaving directory '/gtk+-1.2.7/gtk'
make [1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make [1]: Leaving directory '/gtk+-1.2.7'
make  *** [all-recursive] Error 2

and there it ends.

Can anyone help

My configuration is:
         Slackware 4.0
         gcc-2.95.2
        Glibc-2.1.3
        Glib-1.2.7
