Syntac Highlighting

Ladies and Gentlemen,

this may be a bit off-topic, but I do not know where else to ask that
question. I would like to have a text widget in my program which is able
to perform syntax hightlighting. This should be modular, i.e. not for a
particular language like C or HTML, but setable by the user - maybe it
would even incorporate a plug-in architecture.

Despite being used to tools like yacc (or bison) and flex, I simply do not
know where to start. Any hints will be highly appreciated.
