gedit supports Gnome MDI.

Actually, now I come to look at it, the Gnome MDI model doesn't do subwindows; 
the modes it supports are top-level, notebook and modal. Subwindows under X 
are really hard, as they'd really require their own window manager or special 
support in the existing one.
