I think there are many answers to that:
- You need sometimes to change the way you do something
to improve it. Nobody can do everything perfectly right the first time.
- The changes to switch from 1.0 to 1.2 are not so big. I know it takes
time to do it,
but it's far from being complex.
- You can have gtk1.0 and gtk1.2 libraries together on your computer.
So you can run 1.0 and 1.2 gtk programs.
It's a bit of hassle for developpers, but I think it's worth it.
For users it would just be a matter of installing both libraries,
and it doesn't take so much space.
