Splash screens are usually considered unfriendly in X. Because the system 
doesn't lock up when loading programs, the user can do useful work when this 
is happening (for example, Star Office takes several minutes to get going). 
Splash screens just get in the way, particularly if they don't have title bars.

If you have to put one in, for goodness' sake put an option to turn it off.
