GTK1.2.0 is not installed... YES IT IS!!!

I've tried to install Soundtracker that needs GTK+1.2.0 or higher, but
it comes with the following errormessage:

*** Could not run GTK test program, checking why...
*** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log
for the
*** exact error that occured. This usually means GTK was incorrectly
installed
*** or that you have moved GTK since it was installed. In the latter
case, you
*** may want to edit the gtk-config script: /usr/bin/gtk-config
configure: error: Cannot find GTK: Is gtk-config in path?

I HAVE installed the GTK-libs correctly else I couldn't run 'configure'
for GTK1.2.0.

I have also edited /etc/ld.so.conf so it looks like this:
/usr/i486-linuxaout/lib
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib
/usr/local/lib

When I install GTK I write the following lines:
./configure
make
make install

and it seems that it installs correctly.
I know there has been some problems with Redhat 5.0 but I have 5.2.

Does anybody know what could be wrong?
