   Maybe someone can help me out.  I can run the gtk-config prog from the
   command line fine, but in something like, say:

   gcc helloworld.c -o helloworld 'gtk-config --cflags --libs'

Subtle point.  You need to use ` (accent grave), not ' (quote).
