gtk+-1.2.3 requires Perl!?

Hello,

I was unable to compile gtk+-1.2.3, since it insisted on using Perl
despite the fact that configuration had determined that Perl was not
installed on my system.  This problem did not occur in earlier versions
(up to 1.2.2).  Her is the end of the compilation message I received
(the .h files were output in one line, w/o carriage returns)
