Checking for Meta or Alt

What's the right way to check for the Meta and Alt modifiers?  All the
tutorial mentions are stuff like GDK_MOD1_MASK, which isn't correct
since you have no way of knowing which modifier alt is on a given
person's machine.  (For example, Meta on my machine is mod3, Alt is
mod1.)  And if I want to use Super or Hyper, I get _really_ confused.
