Not sure about gcc 2.8.1, but I can vouch for the fact that I've used egcs
to
compile my kernels for almost a year now and I have yet to produce a
non-bootable
kernel ... my box is as stable as it should be, so AFAIK, you don't have to
use gcc 2.7.2.x to compile your kernels ...
