GTK installation problem

hello...

i'm somewhat new to linux, though i've used unix for several years at school. i finally put it on my machine at home. i've noticed that a great deal of programs require GTK to install, so i downloaded it and glib. when i tried to ./configure in the gtk+-1.2.3 directory, i got an error right after it printed "searching for X" to the screen. it needs the X libraries to finish, i guess. but i have no clue where to get the X libraries (or if i already have them). i'm not a developer, but i would like to be able to used products that require GTK. can anyone help??
