1.2.0 Install Problems

I wish to install glib/gtk+ 1.2.0 on my Red Hat 5.1 machine.  I wish to
do so in such a manner as to not "break" any existing applications.  I
tried to build using the rpm command but the glib spec file is evidently
wrong (still references 1.1 stuff).  Can anyone help?  I'm a relatively
new Red Hat convert and wish to get up and running developing using both
the glib and gtk libraries as soon as possible.
