Transparent XPM problems in GTK+ 1.1.14?

I like using the GNOME stock icons (shrunken to 16x16) in my menus.  
However, I've noticed that in GTK+ 1.1.14 the pixmaps that are only one 
color (ie the Close icon and the Cut icon) don't show up AT ALL.  I've 
never had any problems like this with GTK+ 1.0.x or GTK+ 1.1.x (until 
this version -- last one I used was 1.1.7).  Any ideas?
