Perl and compilation problem

Hi,

I downloaded GTK+ version 1.2.3, and tried to compile it. It fails when perl 
files were treated. It seems that perl doesn't recognize the syntax. I am on 
FreeBSD 2.2.5 and my perl version is 4 patch 36.
Could anyone help me ?
