    The GTK+ FAQ on www.gtk.org provide some useful informations about 
    threads and GTK+ (Tony rewrote the 'Is GTK+ thread safe?' article, 
    and there is a pointer o GPK (for instance 
        http://www.humanfactor.com/gpk/)
    which presents an add-on that allows thread-safe access to GTK+).
