I'm not too happy with this.
Surely the "best" solution to the problem was posted last week:

GtkCanvas ought to be in the gtk+ library. It would provide basic no-frills
canvas support. I presume it would allow any other gtk widget to be placed
on it at given locations, and probably allow lines to be drawn on it with
given widths and colours. It would handle its own expose events, and would
support the idea of 'printing' in that it could generate a PostScript
representation of itself.

So GnomeCanvas would stay in the Gnome libraries, and would build all its
special extra functionality on top of GtkCanvas.

Would this not make everyone happy? It is more work to implement of course,
because GnomeCanvas has almost certainly been written as one monolithic
lump and would have to be carefully split apart.
