memory usage?

why does a simple gtk app take 1492kb in my RSS?  this is a simple,
'hello-world' style app.  I was concerned about perl-Tk apps eating too
much memory, but are C/gtk apps any better?  A simple perl-Tk program eats
about the same ram... I'm hoping that gtk scales better when the program
gets bigger, though.  Probably does... right?
