How to actually _use_ themes?

Hi,

I've managed to successfully compile and install a snapshot of
gtk-theme. I have all the gtk libs installed, and i compiled & installed
the theme libs, then added the theme directory to my $LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

However, I'm unsure as to how I actually get gtk apps to use/recognise
the themes! They don't by default, and if I was to recompile a gtk app,
how would I go about
