make test fails (sigsegv) perl/GTK 0.4

I'm trying to build perl/GTK 0.4 on OSF 4.0b but get the followong error
from make test

PERL_DL_NONLAZY=1 /usr/local/bin/perl -Iblib/arch -Iblib/lib
-I/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.00502/alpha-dec_osf
-I/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.00502 test.pl

** ERROR **: sigsegv caught
*** Exit 1
Stop.

I've got gtk 1.0.6 installed and have been using gcc 2.8.1 and perl
5.00502

How can I go about identifying/solving this problem
