After some discussions with Owen and M.Stekelenburg, we've come up
with an approach to handling threads with gtk.  Apparently Owen
implemented it and it's in the latest CVS snapshot, but I haven't had
time to check it out yet.

It does *not* mean that gtk will be thread safe with no extra code,
but it does mean that it should now be possible to right thread safe
programs that call gtk from multiple threads.
