problem found

I really thought I was having a problem. Being new to gtk I didn't really
trust it much. The problem was I ran 'gtk_init(&argc, &argv)' after a
couple gtk commands.

To make this response worthwhile I'll throw in another question then
shaddup.

How do you keep the menu as a small strip at the top of the container?
Stretching the container over a table works until your change the size of
the container.
