Does XFree's DGA fall under the 'easy, good' cathegory?
There's also the newest SVGAlib that will switch to the next available
virtual console. You can run it from X, but it's not X. Saves lots of
memory, as you don't really need a running X Server.
Both DGA and SVGAlib require suid binaries, though.
