Once again, check out GEOS class/object model.  They support a complete
user interface API, that has absolutely NO connection with how the things
are actually laid out on the screen.  Sure, it gives hints to the UI
renderer, but for the most part, everything, and I mean everything,
from window frames to buttons to proportional widgets to text layout, 
about that user interface is entirely up to the UI renderer. :)

This is what I propose be done with GTK too.
