Depends on what you expect to happen if someone copies your software
in opposition to the copyright permissions.  If you have failed to
register your copyright, you can only sue for actual damages.  If it's 
registered, you can sue for statutory penalties and treble damages.
Registering with the US Copyright Office costs $20 and requires that
you fill out a form, and disclose the source of your program (hehe).

Lest you think no one would dare take a GPL'ed program proprietary, it
happened to me.  Multiple times.
