  I did something similar with Tcl/Tk (ugh! what a terrible C
  API!) 8.0 and Posix threads on HP-UX, seemed to work ok in my
  experiment though every now and then it would crash. 
  Also know of GPK (GTK Proxy Kit) but I don't know what it is
  the current status.
