gEdit itself doesn't plan to make a custom widget to do syntax highlighting,
especially now that it doesn't have to. Thomas Mailund Jensen has made a source
editor widget (I think it's on the cvs tree for gtk 1.1 now) that does syntax
highlighting based on regular expressions. Right now it is a gtk 1.1 specific
thing, so until we make a release that requires 1.1 (which we will soon, as I'd
like to add split-screen support which can only be done with the 1.1 text
widget) we won't be able to add support for syntax highlighting using his
widget.
