Another thought, why not write UI in Java/Corba?
You can use JDK 1.2 (it'll be production when you finish),
It contains CORBA client build in, and JFC which is a very nice and powerfull
GUI toolkit.
This way you get not only Linux/Win32 portability, but any other Java
platform...
