gtk+-1.1.9, imlib-1.8.1 and gnome?

has anyone succeeded in compiling imlib-1.8.1 with gtk+-1.1.9? 
I get the following error message: 

imlib_config.o: In function `add_onoff_visual':
/usr/local/src/imlib-1.8.1/utils/imlib_config.c:1256: undefined reference to `gtk_clist_set_policy'
make[2]: *** [imlib_config] Error 1
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

Does anyone know what's wrong?
Is it possible to compile gnome-0.30 with gtk+-1.1.9?
