gtk_widget_show_all and gtk_tree objects

I noticed that when using gtk_widget_show_all(...) 
it expands trees even though I explicitly collapse each tree.

Of course I could go and set about 50 or so gtk_widget_show(...)
in place of 10 gtk_widget_show_all(...)
but I was wondering if this is intentional behaviour....
