perl/gtk 0.2_04 make test error

The last few lines of make test are this on my computer.
PERL_DL_NONLAZY=1 /usr/bin/perl -I./blib/arch -I./blib/lib -I/usr/lib/perl5/i386-linux/5.00404 -I/usr/lib/perl5 test.pl
Gtk warning: cannot open display: at blib/lib/Gtk.pm line 62.
make: *** [test_dynamic] Error 1
this computer is redhat 5.0 with gtk+-1.0.5 (I've compiled some of the examples so I am pretty sure gtk is working properly)
any ideas?
